Overview

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly called the ZZ Plant, is prized for its glossy, upright stems and near-indestructible nature. Native to Eastern Africa, it’s an excellent choice for busy homes or offices with less-than-ideal light.

Light

Adapts well to a range of light levels, from low to bright indirect light. Avoid strong direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Water

Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the compost to dry out almost completely between waterings. The thick rhizomes store water, making this plant very drought tolerant.

Humidity & Temperature

Thrives in normal household humidity and temperatures between 16–26°C. Protect from cold draughts and frost.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining houseplant compost, ideally with added grit or perlite. Always choose a pot with drainage to prevent rot.

Feeding

Feed lightly every 6–8 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. No feeding is needed in winter.

Pruning & Maintenance

Very low maintenance; simply remove any yellowing stems at the base. Wipe leaves occasionally to maintain their natural shine.

Propagation

Can be propagated by leaf cuttings or division, though patience is required as growth is slow.

Pet Safety

Toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.

Common Issues

• Yellowing stems: Overwatering – reduce watering frequency

• Soft or mushy roots: Poor drainage – repot into free-draining compost

• Slow growth: Normal behaviour, especially in low light
