Overview
Ficus elastica, commonly known as the Rubber Plant, is a bold, architectural houseplant loved for its large, glossy leaves. Native to Southeast Asia, it’s a reliable and long-lived plant that brings instant presence to interiors.
Light
Prefers bright, indirect light but will tolerate medium light conditions. Too little light can slow growth, while harsh direct sun may scorch the leaves.
Water
Allow the top layer of compost to dry out between waterings. Overwatering is the most common issue, so always err on the side of caution.
Humidity & Temperature
Enjoys average household humidity and temperatures between 16–24°C. Avoid cold draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining houseplant compost, ideally with added perlite. Choose a heavy pot to support the plant as it grows taller.
Feeding
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser. Reduce feeding in autumn and winter.
Pruning & Maintenance
Wipe leaves regularly to keep them dust-free and glossy. Prune in spring if you need to control height or shape.
Propagation
Can be propagated from stem cuttings in water or compost, ideally during the warmer months.
Pet Safety
Toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
Common Issues
-
Yellowing leaves: Often caused by overwatering – allow soil to dry more between waterings
-
Leaf drop: Sudden changes in temperature or light – move to a more stable spot
-
Brown leaf edges: Dry air or inconsistent watering – improve care consistency
